Fiat Grande Panda, the mythical city car, now with SUV bodywork and electric version
Contenido del artículo
The Fiat Panda occupies a special place in the history of the Italian brand. This small urban car was launched in 1980 with an original design by Giorgetto Giugiaro and was produced continuously until 2003. Two more generations of the model were marketed until the new Fiat Grande Panda, the reinvention of Fiat's mythical city car.
In addition to adopting the surname "Grande" within its name, the new Panda undergoes a total transformation by adopting a distinctive SUV style, although inspired by the original 1980 model. Far from conventionalism, the new Grande Panda is now bigger, more technological and more efficient, thanks to a range of engines including an electric version.
The design of the new Fiat Grande Panda
In terms of design, the Fiat Grande Panda combines avant-garde aesthetic elements with retro-inspired details. They are found, for example, at the front, where the new fairing grille integrates LED headlights and the Fiat logo, giving the vehicle a futuristic look. Above it, a high, flat hood, while at the bottom the bumper stands out with a large air intake at the bottom, plastic cladding and a metallic-look guard.
The profile continues the SUV aesthetics so prevalent in today's market, with wheel arches and sills covered with plastic protections. The "PANDA" lettering on the exterior door panels, the longitudinal roof rails or the 17" alloy wheels are also part of its successful aesthetics.
And at the rear, a roof spoiler, vertical lights protruding from the running boards and a trunk lid with "FIAT" engraving are characteristic elements of the classic '80s model. This view is completed by a robust bumper with most of its surface covered with plastic coating.
In terms of dimensions, the Fiat Grande Panda is now a larger vehicle, with 3.99 meters long, 1.57 meters high and 1.76 meters wide. To this must be added a trunk with 361 liters of cargo space complemented by a series of storage compartments in the cabin that provide another 13 liters of strategically distributed and located storage.
The interior
Speaking of the interior, the cabin of the Fiat Grande Panda has been inspired by the original 1980 model and adds a number of details and contemporary design elements. For example, the dashboard features a rounded design at its highest part and integrates rectangular air vents positioned vertically on each side of the dashboard.
A multifunction steering wheel with two horizontal spokes integrates the Fiat emblem in the center and, at the bottom, the classic logo of the brand. It is accompanied by a 10" digital instrument panel and a 10.25" touch screen for the infotainment system, both enclosed in a polycarbonate frame.
In the center console there are two horizontal air vents, climate controls, some physical switches, a wireless charging point for mobile devices and the electric parking brake control. This is in addition to front seats with a genuine design, a central armrest and rear seats with folding backrests and divided in 60:40 ratio.
The range of engines
The engine range of the new Fiat Grande Panda will initially consist of two versions. The first will be fully electric, with a front engine of 83 kW (113 hp) of power and a 44 kWh battery that will allow it to offer more than 320 kilometers of range in combined cycle WLTP.
The second option will be a 1.2-liter light hybrid gasoline engine with an output of 100 hp and the DGT's ECO environmental label.
One of the peculiarities of the new Grande Panda will be its charging cable for the battery of the 100% electric version. It is the first vehicle on the market to include an integrated spiral cable solution, which is located under the hood, saving cargo space in the trunk. It is accessed through a hatch in the front grille and is stowed away again once charging is complete, avoiding the mess of traditional cables.
Fiat Grande Panda Prices
Although the launch of the new Fiat Grande Panda has not yet taken place, the model will have a starting price of less than 25,000 euros for the all-electric version. The Grande Panda hybrid will be slightly cheaper and will be the entry-level version.
After its official debut, the new Panda will become part of the wide range of new vehicles that you can already find at Automares, official Fiat dealership of Grupo Concesur in the province of Seville.
