Mercedes A-Class 2023: a major technological and efficient upgrade

The second-generation Mercedes A-Class was launched in 2018 and this year has undergone a major update that affects all areas of the Mercedes-Benz premium compact. The refreshed 2023 Mercedes A-Class gains ground with a more sophisticated image, a higher-quality interior, more comprehensive and logical standard equipment, and a more efficient powertrain range that welcomes electrification.

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class is one of the most successful cars in the current range. It offers a perfect balance between quality, price and driving dynamics. Now, the brand has improved all the attributes of the model with a profound update that manages to place the 2023 A-Class on a new level. In addition, it inherits technology, safety systems and connectivity solutions from other models, such as the Mercedes C-Class, and it is not the only car that has been updated recently, as these improvements are also present in the Mercedes B-Class 2023.

Aesthetic evolution: updated exterior and interior

The exterior design of the Mercedes A-Class 2023 has undergone a significant evolution with a style that conveys power and dynamism. The radiator grille has been redesigned with a star pattern and flat headlights, available as an option in an LED variant. A new rear diffuser, redesigned taillights and a new variety of exterior paints complete the aesthetic enhancements.

The sporty character is underscored by four additional wheel designs in sizes up to 19", including new light-alloy wheels painted in high-gloss black with a multi-spoke design and a high-gloss flange for the AMG Line version.

The interior of the new Mercedes A-Class 2023 also receives some improvements. The new generation steering wheel, finished in nappa leather as standard, is one of them, an element that is present in other models in the range such as the Mercedes E-Class.

It also debuts new ARTICO leather upholstery embossed in three dimensions, while the Progressive trim level offers three cabin colors - black, beige and gray - and is combined with a new carbon fiber trim on the dashboard and doors. Finally, the AMG Line version features bright brushed aluminum trim and contrasting red trim stitching on the seats with ARTICO/MICROCUT leather.

The 2023 A-Class also receives the new generation of the MBUX infotainment system, which offers three appearances for the digital instrument panel (Classic, Sporty, Discreet), three display modes (Navigation, Assistance and Service) and seven color worlds. It is now also possible to have wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a fingerprint sensor has been integrated and the 'Hey Mercedes!' voice assistant has been updated.

More equipment and safety

Another of the sections where the Mercedes-Benz A-Class 2023 has been revised has been in the standard equipment. It now offers many more features, such as the reversing camera, the USB package or the nappa leather steering wheel. Starting with the Progressive trim, LED headlights, seat with lumbar support, parking package and rearview mirror package are standard. In addition, the range of equipment packages has been simplified so that you can have more elements within the same offer.

The new A-Class has also received an upgrade in terms of safety and driving assistance systems. With the updated Driver Assistance Package, the Lane Keeping Assist system control is much more convenient using the Active Steering Control.

The next generation of the parking package supports longitudinal parking and offers, among other things, 360-degree viewing for camera-assisted parking using sharp 3D images.

Electrified motorizations

The engine offering of the 2023 Mercedes A-Class also benefits from this update. The gasoline engines have been electrified thanks to the integration of an additional 48-volt electrical system with a new belt-driven starter generator and a 48-volt battery.

This new system supports the agility of the A-Class by starting with 10 kW more power, improves fuel consumption and efficiency, and allows 'driving' with the combustion engine switched off at constant cruising speed. The battery of the micro-hybrid system is recharged during braking and deceleration.

The engines benefiting from this micro-hybrid technology are the A 180 (136 hp), A 200 (163 hp), A 220 (190 hp) and A 250 (224 hp), all with 7 or 8-speed automatic transmission. The diesel engines are also still available with three efficient 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines: A 180 d (116 hp), A 200 d (150 hp) and A 220 d (190 hp).

On the other hand, the plug-in hybrid version of the A-Class, the A 250 e (218 hp), debuts an improved battery with an increase in usable energy capacity that leads to a longer range in 100% electric mode up to 70-82 kilometers. Motor power has been increased by 5 kW and now reaches 80 kW (109 hp), while the battery supports three different charging options: standard charging at 3.7 kW, charging with alternating current at 7.4 kW and 11 kW, and fast charging with direct current up to 22 kW, allowing the battery level to be increased from 10% to 80% in about 25 minutes.

The new Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC and Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ also adopt the improvements present in this update of the Mercedes A-Class 2023. Among the most prominent changes are the new specific grille, new wheels, rear spoiler, front bumper, updated headlights and exhaust outlets, as well as the AMG emblem on the hood that replaces the Mercedes-Benz laurel star.

The interior also debuts a new standard AMG Performance steering wheel with integrated AMG Dynamics driving mode control, new upholstery for the AMG Performance front seats and the latest update of the MBUX infotainment system with a fingerprint reader, increased charging power via USB and a new AMG-specific display for the instrument cluster.

The engine lineup undergoes minor changes. The 2.0 turbo engine with 306 hp and 400 Nm of the Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC 2023 debuts 48-volt micro-hybrid technology like the gasoline engines of the A-Class. Also new is the 8-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, as well as a front radiator that improves the cooling of all mechanical parts.

Meanwhile, the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ 2023, the sportiest, most extreme and performance version of the A-Class remains unchanged. The powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged engine develops 421 hp and 500 Nm of torque. Thanks to the 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive and an effective 8-speed automatic transmission, it can go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds.
