Peugeot 408 Plug-in Hybrid: the most efficient versions

The new Peugeot 408 was launched just a few months ago as a new fastback crossover of compact size. This new model, which is closely related in terms of design and equipment with the Peugeot 308 and adds to the Peugeot SUV range, offers a complete family of engines including a gasoline engine and two plug-in hybrid versions.

The Peugeot 408 Plug-in Hybrid is the spearhead of a mechanical offer that makes a clear commitment to electrification as a solution for efficiency and performance. Good examples of this are the new Peugeot e-2008 and e-208, two 100% electric vehicles with great range and performance. The 408 Plug-in Hybrid offers a similar approach, but without sacrificing the performance of a powerful gasoline engine.

Two versions of the Peugeot 408 Plug-in Hybrid

The Peugeot 408 plug-in hybrid engines are divided into two. On the one hand, the Plug-in Hybrid 180 version combines a 1.6 turbocharged inline four-cylinder gasoline engine developing 150 hp power with an electric drive with 81 kW (110 hp). The result is a maximum output of 180 hp and a torque of 360 Nm. The system is powered by a 12.4 kWh lithium-ion battery, linked to an e-EAT8 eight-speed automatic transmission.

The second version is the Peugeot 408 Plug-in Hybrid 225, an even more powerful variant based on the Plug-in Hybrid 180 model. The 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine now develops 180 hp, while the electric motor retains the original 81 kW (110 hp). Combined output is now 225 hp, while torque remains at 360 Nm. Similarly, the battery offers 12.4 kWh of energy capacity and the entire system is managed by an eight-speed automatic transmission.

In both cases, the electric range of the Peugeot 408 Plug-in Hybrid is 63 kilometers according to the WLTP protocol. Combined consumption is 1.1 l/100 km in the Plug-in Hybrid 180 version, and 1.2 l/100 km in the Plug-in Hybrid 225 variant, withCO2 emissions of just 26 g/km. Regardless of the engine, the Peugeot 408 PHEV obtains the Zero Emissions environmental label from the Directorate General of Traffic for exceeding 40 kilometers of range in electric mode.

Finally, charging times for the 408 Plug-in Hybrid are reduced to just 1 hour and 40 minutes from a 7.4 kW Wall Box, or 3 hours and 50 minutes from a reinforced outlet.

What does the Peugeot 408 Plug-in Hybrid offer?

The Peugeot 408 Plug-in Hybrid offers an alternative to traditional SUVs, with a different approach, unique in its segment. Based on Peugeot's EMP2 multi-energy platform, the 408 measures 4.69 meters long, 1.85 meters wide and 1.48 meters high, making it taller and longer than the new Peugeot 308 SW, as well as offering 50 mm more wheelbase.

The design of the new 408 shows styling traits that match Peugeot's latest launches, with the front headlights integrating LED daytime running lights in the shape of a fang or the fairing front grille also offered on the Peugeot 3008. Its sinuous fastback silhouette contrasts with the bumper guards, wheel arches and sills characteristic of crossovers, with muscular and balanced proportions that make it particularly attractive.

The rear is highlighted by a sloping rear window and elegant LED taillights integrated in a black frame. The powerful rear bumper adds the final touch of style, as do the various alloy wheel designs in sizes ranging from 17" to 20". In addition, the bodywork is available in six different colors: Obsession Blue, Titanium Gray, Artense Gray, Elixir Red, Pearlescent White and Black Pearl Nera.

Interior and technology

For its part, the interior of the Peugeot 408 Plug-in Hybrid seamlessly integrates the Peugeot i-Cockpit, an enveloping driving position with dual screen for the instrument panel and infotainment system, both in 10 ". The other elements are combined with various fabric, Napa leather or Alcantara upholstery options, and a complete technological offer that integrates ambient lighting, wireless charging point or compatibility with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
