Do you know what have been the most purchased toys in online sales?
Every Christmas, the little ones (and not so little ones) look forward to the presents that Santa Claus and Three Wise Men bring each year. At this time of the year, it is time to prove that we have been good and see what their Majesties surprise us with this holiday season. The illusion of waking up every January 6th and seeing the presents under the tree is a feeling that lasts generation after generation. However, times are also changing for gifts with the advent of online sales.
In recent years, we have seen a generational change in the toys that children ask the Three Wise Men for every year. Technology has made its way and most of the letters are already filled with electronic devices. One more reflection of the advancement of the times that begins already in the smallest. Dolls, cars and board games have been replaced by mobiles, tablets and drones.
The reasons for the growth of online retailing
Nabumbu is one of the online toy stores that have grown the most in recent years. Javier Padilla, one of its managers, tells us some of the keys to this upward trend: "Online toy sales are growing at a very fast pace, especially in the last 3 years. We follow the trend in Europe, where there are countries like Germany where Amazon already sells more than 40% of all toys. Spain is always in the Top 5 in e-commerce sales in Europe. The curious thing is that the phenomenon of online sales had not been transferred to toys until the last few years". He also recognizes that the average toy purchase expenditure has grown in recent years to almost double (from €30-35 to €50).
"There is a shift in the buying trend. Other years the leaders are toys linked to a Disney movie premiere or children's TV series. Now, we are seeing how children and parents are opting more for other things," says the Nabumbu manager. " Technology is significantly reducing the age range in which children want to receive non-electronic toys".
Finally, Javier Padilla also refers to gender stereotypes in toys: "They have been disappearing. In fact, at Nabumbu there is no gender search engine. We don't distinguish between toys for boys or girls because we don't think that pink or blue are colors that can be assigned to one sex or the other. On the contrary, parents are often the most prejudiced and ask us questions such as "Why is this kitchenette pink? Can't boys use it? To that, we reply, "Why is pink a girl's color?"".
Toy sales successes
Nabumbu has also told us about the toys that have caused a furor this Christmas: "The X Laser guns to play the famous 'laser tag' have been one of the best selling toys this year. It is a game that the little ones love and can be played both outdoors and indoors. It has literally taken the little ones and not so little ones by storm."
"iMagicBox has been another hit among toys that incorporate electronics. It is a magic game that is linked to a mobile application. Inside there is a social network where children have to progress as 'wandies', receiving video lessons, answering quizzes, etc. It has been one of the top five best-selling toys and looks set to remain strong for the rest of the year."
Finally, among the more classic toys, La casa de los juguetes has been another of the winners this Christmas: "It is a product that children like very much because it is very complete. Parents like it because it has several toys in one and can be easily picked up". Masha and the Bear has also been another of the characters that has slipped into the 'top 5' in sales.
These are some of the toys that have caused a furor this Christmas thanks to online sales. And you, what are the new toys that have landed in your home this year?
