Today it is an essential part of Mercedes Benz, responsible for the company's sportiest models and the development of the racing branch. But what is Mercedes Benz AMG, what is its history, what are its most relevant and aspirational models? Join us on this journey full of power, adrenaline and sportiness.
Mercedes AMG: meaning and history
Founded by two former Mercedes Benz engineers, Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, AMG was founded in 1967 as a specialist tuner for Mercedes models. Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach (AMG), refers to the surnames of its two founders (Aufrecht and Melcher) and to Aufrecht's city of birth (Großaspach).
AMG begins its career modifying Mercedes Benz series production vehicles, although the two companies were not related. Aufrecht and Melcher decide to take a very special Mercedes, the 300 SEL 6.8 AMG, to compete in the 1971 Spa 24 Hours. The powerful 300 SEL was modified to more than 400 hp, the weight was lightened and racing components were installed. The first AMG racing car would finish second in the legendary endurance race at the Belgian Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Did you know that this car was even involved in the development of the supersonic Concorde aircraft?
Other models would follow, all based on Mercedes Benz vehicles. AMG mainly offered performance packages, with aesthetic and mechanical enhancements, which could be applied to a long list of models. It also provided, as always throughout the history of Mercedes AMG, vital research and development work. They are responsible for major breakthroughs that have made Mercedes Benz cars faster, more powerful and safer than ever before.
The birth of Mercedes AMG
All these advances were made without the support of Mercedes, until 1990, when both companies signed a collaboration agreement. As a result of this partnership, the first genuine model developed by both companies was born in 1993, the 280 hp Mercedes C36 AMG. On January 1, 1999, in view of the good results of this partnership and the potential of AMG, Daimler AG founds Mercedes AMG to be responsible for the brand's high-performance cars.
Since then, AMG has become synonymous with exclusivity, performance and good work, conquering the most demanding circuits in the world, driven by the best drivers and achieving great feats in competitions as varied as Formula 1 and the German Touring Car Championship (DTM). The most recent of these conquests was the lap record at the Nürburgring conquered by the Mercedes AMG GT Black Series at the end of 2020.
