Mercedes AMG: meaning and history

Founded by two former Mercedes Benz engineers, Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, AMG was founded in 1967 as a specialist tuner for Mercedes models. Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach (AMG), refers to the surnames of its two founders (Aufrecht and Melcher) and to Aufrecht's city of birth (Großaspach).

AMG begins its career modifying Mercedes Benz series production vehicles, although the two companies were not related. Aufrecht and Melcher decide to take a very special Mercedes, the 300 SEL 6.8 AMG, to compete in the 1971 Spa 24 Hours.
