Mercedes Drive Pilot: what is it and on which models is it already available?
Contenido del artículo
Technology is advancing at a great pace and Mercedes Benz is a benchmark in the development of advanced driving assistance systems that allow vehicles to be automated and reach new heights in terms of safety. The new Mercedes models are safe and connected cars, and the latest Mercedes Drive Pilot technology that has just been launched in Germany takes both driving and the way we understand the concept of the automobile to a new level.
Mercedes Benz is the first car manufacturer in the world to have a valid international certificate for conditional autonomous driving. It offers the Drive Pilot system as a factory option for series production vehicles, i.e. new cars like the ones you can buy from Concesur Group. This new system is the spearhead of the Intelligent Drive Mercedes driving assistance package and a new step into the future.
What is the Mercedes Drive Pilot Level 3 system?
The Mercedes Drive Pilot system is a conditional autonomous driving technology. This system controls speed and distance, and guides the vehicle within its lane. It is a Level 3 autonomous driving assistant that analyzes and takes into account the road profile, events on the road and traffic signs. Drive Pilot also reacts to unexpected traffic situations and handles them autonomously, either with dodging maneuvers or by applying emergency braking.
Mercedes Drive Pilot builds on the vehicle sensing technology of the driving assistance package and adds additional sensors, including radar, LiDAR and cameras, as well as ultrasonic and humidity sensors that provide valuable data. These sensors and cameras are strategically distributed around the car, allowing the environment to be monitored at all times.
With this system, you can delegate driving to the system under certain conditions, such as in dense traffic or in congested situations on suitable stretches of freeway at speeds of up to 60 km/h. At the moment, this conditional autonomous driving system (SAE Level 3) is only available in Germany, where it can be ordered from May 17, 2022 as part of the optional equipment of two new Mercedes models.
Mercedes Benz intends to make Drive Pilot available in all markets worldwide, including Spain in the near future.
Mercedes Drive Pilot models
Which models already include the Mercedes Drive Pilot system as part of their optional equipment? For now, there are two vehicles that the brand has equipped with this revolutionary technology. The first is the luxurious Mercedes S-Class, the brand's most exclusive sedan. The model is offered with short and long-wheelbase bodywork, and includes a complete range of efficient engines with different power levels.
In the new S-Class, technology, comfort and safety are the three pillars on which the new generation sedan has been built. Of course, Drive Pilot debuts in this model, an optional equipment has a price in Germany of 5.000€. The second model to include the conditioned autonomous driving system is the new 100% electric Mercedes EQS.
The new EQS is the most complete, equipped and advanced model of the Mercedes EQ electric vehicle brand. With a revolutionary design and highly efficient propulsion systems and autonomy, the electric sedan is also one of the safest cars on the market. With the Mercedes Drive Pilot system, the EQS is a technological highlight. The system is priced in Germany at €7,430.
Mercedes Benz, a pioneer in safety and driving assistants
With a wealth of technical innovations, Mercedes Benz has not ceased to lead the way in safety since its creation in 1886. Safety is one of the brand's core values, with such advanced systems as Mercedes Drive Pilot. For example, Mercedes has been offering advanced Level 2 driver assistance systems in its vehicles for years.
These systems make life much easier in everyday situations and help to control speed and distance, steering or lane changes, as well as parking maneuvers. Mercedes Benz was the first manufacturer in the world to receive internationally valid system approval for conditional autonomous driving in December 2021, but it doesn't end there. The brand will implement the next level of automation (SAE Level 4) in the future, with fully autonomous parking technology.
