The new Mercedes Benz CLS 2021 is an elegant four-door coupe that now offers more sportiness and customization options. This update mainly affects its exterior design, the interior has been upgraded, updated the range of engines and new safety systems and driving assistance. Also new is the Mercedes AMG Limited Edition model and the different customization options it now offers.
Mercedes Benz CLS 2021: an even sportier coupe
The CLS is a coupe and, as such, is part of the range of Mercedes Benz dream cars, along with roadsters and convertibles. Its design is the main reason for purchase among Mercedes CLS customers, and this image is even sportier after the update. In the base model, equipped as standard with the Avantgarte Exterior line, it features a new front apron with large air intakes, two slats on each side and a front splitter in silver chrome. The rear apron sports a black diffuser-effect insert and a silver chrome trim strip.
For the new Mercedes CLS AMG Line, the sporty styling has been enhanced to new standards. Thanks to the AMG aesthetic kit, it includes a specific front apron with A-Wing profile in black accompanied by a front splitter in silver chrome. Added to this are sporty air intakes with vertical profiles and aerodynamic appendages in gloss black. The AMG side trims give way to a small rear spoiler on the trunk lid.
The new radiator grille is common to all trims of the new Mercedes Benz CLS 2021. Two new 19-inch alloy wheels have been designed for the Avantgarde line, while the AMG Line version has two new colors for the 20-inch AMG alloy wheels. The colors spectral blue metallic, Jupiter red, Kashmir white magno and emerald green are also new.
A new level of interior finishing
In the interior, which the new CLS shares with the Mercedes E-Class, has worked to introduce new finishes. Two new trim element versions are now available: open-pore brown walnut wood and high-gloss gray wood. The range of leather upholstery for the seats has also been extended with the chromatic combinations neva gray/magma gray and Siena brown/black. The two-tone designo interior trim with Exclusive Nappa leather upholstery can be ordered in five new color combinations: classic red/black, equestrian brown/black, tartufo brown/black, deep white/black and yacht blue/black.
One of the most important updates to the interior of the Mercedes CLS is the newly designed multifunction steering wheel. Finished in nappa leather, the spokes are gloss black with silver-colored rims and chrome-plated shift paddles. The steering wheel makes use of the capacitive principle to recognize the driver's hands when equipped with the optional DISTRONIC active distance assistant.
CLS engines: more power and efficiency
The engine range of the new Mercedes Benz CLS 2021 consists of two gasoline engines. On the one hand, the 299 hp CLS 350 and, on the other, the 367 hp CLS 450 4MATIC. Both are equipped with the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission as standard equipment. The Mercedes AMG CLS 53 4MATIC+ with 435 hp is the spearhead. The most powerful, dynamic and high-performance option in the CLS range is also efficient thanks to EQ Power hybrid technology.
New among the diesel engines available is the 265 hp CLS 300 d 4MATIC. It debuted in March 2021 and introduces hybrid EQ Power technology to improve consumption and emissions. In addition, it is listed with the ECO environmental badge of the Directorate General of Traffic. The other turbodiesel options are the efficient 194 hp CLS 220 d and the powerful 330 hp CLS 400 d 4MATIC. All engines are equipped as standard with the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission.
Advanced safety and driving assistants
The update of the Mercedes Benz CLS has also meant the arrival of new driving assistance systems. Among the new features are the active braking assistant, the active speed limit assistant or the active assistant for traffic jams. The latter is part of the Driving Assistance Plus package and automatically controls the steering at speeds of up to 60 km/h (37 mph). The new CLS also parks and unparks automatically thanks to the PARKTRONIC system and 360° camera. Finally, the ENERGIZING comfort control is designed to maximize comfort thanks to the massage programs and ambient lighting system.
Limited Edition special series for the new CLS
The Limited Edition special series of the new CLS 2021 is limited to 300 units. It is based on the Mercedes AMG CLS 53 4MATIC+ and customers can choose for the body in the colors Cashmere magno or selenite gray magno. The exterior is accompanied by 20-inch AMG alloy wheels and decorative stripes in glossy dark gray metallic or glossy standard black. Also available as standard are the AMG Night and AMG Night II packages, with exclusive gloss black accents.
Standard equipment includes the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package. This equipment adds red brake calipers with AMG badge and AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather / microfiber DYNAMIC. At the same time, the interior features two-tone AMG nappa leather upholstery in black/silver gray Pearl, carbon fiber trim elements, red contrast stitching and the AMG badge on the center console.
