Car-to-X is the technology that enables vehicles to exchange data with each other and with their environment. This concept could radically transform future mobility. We don't have to wait long to find out what the future holds. Just take a trip to Santander, the capital of Cantabria and one of the first cities in the world to have permanent Internet access. To this end, more than 12,000 sensors are being installed throughout the municipality, which will send all relevant environmental data to the network.

In the future, "smart Santander" will report on the weather, the water temperature on its beaches, roads with congested traffic or available parking spaces in urban parking lots. The city will become an intelligent system, whose sensors will monitor CO2 or pollen concentrations and noise levels, control the irrigation system of green areas and optimize public lighting. This could save up to 10 percent of electrical energy, say those responsible for the project.
