The April Fair in Seville is one of the most famous festivities in our country. Annually, many Spaniards and citizens from other countries visit our city to enjoy this festivity. For a week (from today until next Saturday), Sevillians live with great intensity this important date. In the Real de la Feria, a great part of the culture of the place is concentrated where traditions are exalted to their maximum expression.
A Feria de Abril with almost two centuries of history
The origin of this festival goes way back in time. Specifically to 1846, when the Sevillian councilors José María Ibarra and Narciso Bonaplata decided to create a three-day fair for the purchase and sale of livestock. This was held in the Prado de San Sebastián, after the approval of Isabel II.
Since then, the Feria de Abril has done nothing but grow. It gradually became one of the most important celebrations in the city and its commercial character was replaced by that of a social festival. Today, it occupies more than one million square meters in the area of Los Remedios and was visited last year by about four million people.
An event deeply rooted in the city
The Feria de Abril has a cultural factor that resembles the character of the city. One of them is bullfighting. The fifteen streets that make up the fairgrounds are named after historic bullfighters, from Joselito el Gallo to Juan Belmonte.
Manzanilla and wine, sevillanas or guitar are just some of the essential elements in any self-respecting caseta. Along with Easter, the Seville Fair makes April the most special month in the city.
Any visitor who comes for the first time to this event has some appointments that can not miss, such as seeing the traditional Alumbrado ( the first Saturday of the Fair since it changed to the new format), take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage throughout the real or be dazzled by the fireworks festival on the last day.
