Nothing is set in stone when it comes to tastes. Nor is there anything written in the ways of traveling. In recent years, classic tourism has begun to decline timidly, while there has been an upturn in more exotic destinations where new experiences are sought. This is where the story of Route 666 begins, a direct road to mystery that is visited by more and more people.
In 1926, the Federal Highway and Transportation Agency randomly assigned Route 666 to a nearly 200-kilometer road through the southwestern United States. At first, it was just another road with almost no traffic that crossed the states of Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado. However, this nomenclature created a halo of mystery around it since its foundation.
Many enigmas around Route 666
At the beginning, this number related to the Devil caused the most superstitious to avoid this road in spite of driving more kilometers. The urban legends that were forming around this road did not help much to dispel doubts about it. These accidents, apparitions and even deaths that were attributed to the circulation along this access generated fear among drivers.
However, traffic managers in the area could not deny the evidence. According to the data, this road averaged a much higher number of accidents compared to other similar roads. In fact, the number of emergency calls were significantly higher at this location than on similar roads. This was reported in the media and Route 666 became one of the 20 most dangerous roads in the USA.
The police investigated these mysterious events and soon found the key. The monotonous route, coupled with the absence of law enforcement (which increased the average speed through the area) and the extreme temperatures led to a higher number of accidents. However, many continued to ignore these police reasons and maintained that this road was cursed. In the face of so much controversy, the Federal Administration had to give in and in 2003 ended up changing the name of Route 666 to Route 491 in an attempt to leave these false stories in the past.
